Journey into the heart of Swedish Lapland on an unforgettable 100 km wilderness expedition through remote mountain lakes, rivers and some of Europe’s last truly wild landscapes.
Imagine flying by helicopter into the vast wilderness of Northern Lapland, far from roads, villages and everyday life. Below you lie crystal-clear lakes, rugged mountain peaks and endless expanses of untouched nature. With your canoes and expedition equipment delivered to the remote shores of Upper Kaitumjaure, your adventure begins.
Over six days, we will paddle approximately 100 km through the spectacular Kaitum lake system and down the legendary Kaitum River. This is a journey for those who want to experience the freedom of wilderness travel, the challenge of moving through wild waters and the simple pleasure of camping beneath the Arctic sky.
Explore the wild heart of Lapland
Our expedition begins on three interconnected mountain lakes, surrounded by the dramatic scenery of Swedish Lapland’s highest mountain regions. Here, the pace of life slows to the rhythm of the paddle. Each day brings new views, secluded campsites and opportunities to experience the extraordinary beauty of the northern wilderness.
We will spend a day away from our canoes to hike into the surrounding mountains, climbing towards panoramic viewpoints overlooking the lakes and vast Arctic landscape. It is an opportunity to stretch our legs, explore the terrain on foot and appreciate just how remote and magnificent this region really is.
This is genuine wilderness country, home to moose, reindeer, and elusive predators such as bears, lynx, wolves and wolverines. Sightings of wildlife are never guaranteed, but the knowledge that these animals roam freely across the landscape adds a special sense of adventure to every day.
Paddle One of Europe's Last Wild Rivers
After exploring the lakes, we will follow the water downstream into the mighty Kaitum River, travelling approximately 60 km through an ever-changing landscape of forested banks, rocky shorelines and rushing whitewater.
The Kaitum is renowned for its wild character and excellent fishing opportunities. Its varied rapids offer an exciting challenge for experienced paddlers, with sections ranging from Grade I to Grade V. Some of the more demanding rapids will be portaged, allowing us to choose our route carefully and approach the river with respect.
This is not simply a canoe holiday. It is a true expedition where teamwork, sound judgement and a spirit of adventure are essential. We will navigate the river together, establish remote wilderness camps and enjoy the satisfaction of travelling through this remarkable landscape under our own power.
For those who love fishing, the Kaitum region is also one of Swedish Lapland’s most attractive destinations. The clear waters and remote setting create excellent opportunities to fish during our journey, subject to local regulations and conditions.
If you are looking for a real adventure, far from crowded trails and conventional tourist destinations, this is your opportunity to discover Lapland from a completely different perspective.

Your expedition, made easier
Although the landscape feels wonderfully remote, reaching the starting point is straightforward. Kiruna is connected to Stockholm by air and rail, while Gällivare is another convenient rail connection for travellers arriving by train.
We meet in Kiruna before travelling together to the helicopter base. From there, we fly into the wilderness and begin our expedition. At the end of the journey, we return to civilisation at Kaitum and take the train back to Kiruna.
At Moln, we believe that the journey should be part of the adventure. Our trips in the Nordic countries are designed to be accessible by public transport wherever possible. Travelling by train or bus allows you to discover more of the country along the way while reducing the need for a rental car.

Day 2 – Helicopter flight and first Paddle
We travel to the helicopter base and fly into the remote mountain landscape of Upper Kaitumjaure. After unloading our equipment and preparing the canoes, we begin paddling across the magnificent Kaitum lake system. Our first wilderness camp awaits beside the water.
Day 3 – Mountain hiking and wilderness camping
Today we leave the canoes behind and head into the surrounding mountains for a day hike. Enjoy expansive views across the lakes and surrounding peaks, explore the rugged terrain and experience the stillness of the Arctic wilderness before returning to camp.
Day 4 – Paddling through the mountain lakes
We continue our journey through the interconnected lakes, travelling past dramatic shorelines and remote mountain scenery. We take our time, enjoy the landscape and find another beautiful location for our wilderness camp.
Day 5 – Entering the Kaitum River
Our expedition continues downstream as the landscape and character of the water begin to change. We navigate the river together, assessing rapids and portaging challenging sections where necessary. Another day of exploration brings new scenery and the satisfaction of travelling deeper into the wilderness.
Day 6 – Wild water and remote campsites
We continue along the Kaitum River, tackling suitable rapids and enjoying the freedom of travelling through this remote region. There may be opportunities for fishing along the way, followed by an evening at camp surrounded by the sounds and sights of northern nature.
Day 7 – Final paddle and return to Kiruna
We complete the final section of our canoe journey and reach Kaitum, marking the end of our approximately 100 km expedition. From here, we take the train back to Kiruna and spend the night at a hotel, with time to reflect on the adventure we have shared.
